RURAL TEXAS WOMEN AT WORK, 1930-1960

The last day to see this exhibit is August 3rd. We have thoroughly enjoyed this Humanities Texas display. It has several photographs of Texas women working in their homes and several text panels describing the efforts of the Texas Home Demonstration Association that brought in experts to teach the science behind homemaking. Locally, Miss Sadie Lee Oliver was Hemphill County’s Home Demonstration Agent from 1934 to1937. In her position, Miss Oliver held classes that covered kitchens, linens, wardrobes, rugs, slip covers, curtains, American cheddar cheese, first aid, grooming, cleaning floors, landscape principles, budgeting the family income, and my personal favorite, the educational value of clothing contests.

Later, Miss Oliver served several counties in Texas as a Home Demonstration Agent and retired from her position in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

To learn more about the Texas Home Demonstration Association and local working women, be sure to drop by no later than August 3rd.

RENTALS
If you are planning a summer party or back-to-school get together and don’t have enough tables or chairs for your guests, then be sure to call the museum for your rental needs. We have 8’ and 6’ tables, folding chairs, and a large 30’x30’ tent for rent. Tables are $10/table and chairs are $1/chair. This is not a daily fee but rather a one-time use fee. So, if you pick up 20 chairs on Thursday and return them on Tuesday, you will only be charged $20. The tent rental fee is different for private/business use and non-profit use, call for rates.

HOURS AND ADMISSION
The museum is open 9am-12pm and 1pm-5pm Tuesday through Friday. On Saturday, the museum is open 10am-2pm. Admission is free and donations are always welcomed.
