MUSEUM NOTES: June 27, 2019

This week is the opening of the Humanities Texas temporary exhibit, "Rural Texas Women at Work, 1930-1960." The pictorial exhibit pays tribute to the rural housewives and working women during the Great Depression, World War II, the fabulous 1950s and into the swinging 1960s. I have pulled photographs and artifacts from the collection to honor our own Canadian ladies. The Humanities Texas exhibit will be on display until July 31st.

On Saturday, July 20th, come meet former Canadian resident and author Ruth Rogers Beasley. She will be discussing her latest book, Memory Cups of the Texas Panhandle. This is a second edition of Millie Jones Porter’s 1945 book, Memory Cups of Panhandle Pioneers. Ruth shapes Porter’s stories into a chronological timeline and added several appendixes, a bibliography and a comprehensive index. That Saturday is also Cruise Night. So, come down to the museum at 4pm for Ruth’s reading and book signing, then mosey on over to Main Street for the car show and family fun. Free to the public, so no excuse not to be here! Memory Cups of the Texas Panhandle and The Jones Girls of Wheeler County are on sale at the museum gift shop now.

Unfortunately, the gallery room is temporarily closed. We have identified storm damage to the section of the roof located over the artifact storage room. Luckily, the damaged portion of the roof was detected very early on and the collection was not harmed. The collection has been removed from the artifact storage room and temporarily stored in the gallery room until that damaged portion of the roof is repaired. Therefore, we must cancel the Kids History Camp since the gallery room is unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. However, the safety of the collection is a high priority and must come first at this time. Repairs are scheduled to begin after the Fourth of July. As soon as the gallery room is available for rent for events, we will let you know.

We have new items and books in our gift shop; each and every item relates directly to Hemphill County. Need a birthday gift for a child? We have plushy Wildcats, Longhorns, Armadillos, Foxes, and Wolves. We even have a musical galloping horse. We also have insulated tumblers for keeping cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. We have a several prints and many history books ready for purchase. So, don’t forget about the museum gift shop the next time you’re looking for that “just right” gift.
