MUSEUM NOTES: JANUARY 31, 2019

PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDS

Last week I came across a historic Hemphill County archival treasure. I found the original Hemphill County Treasurer’s report of public school funds to Texas State Superintendent for the school year of 1887-1888. Hemphill County received $427.50 from the State’s school fund. Hemphill County’s first Judge, E.E. Polly approved this report prepared by Hemphill County’s first Treasurer, John J. Gerlach. These funds were used to build a one-room rock schoolhouse that stood on 4th Avenue between Main and Kingman Streets. Canadian’s first teacher, Mary Katherine Brainard Isaacs, taught at this school until 1895. To learn more, come to the museum to read about our county’s scholastic history.
